Senate Passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

4/26/12  In a rare election-year moment of bipartisanship, the Senate passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) on Thursday afternoon, legislation that gives women protections and recourse against violence and abuse.

The bill passed with bipartisan support by a vote of 68 – 31. The vote was to reauthorize the measure, which first passed in 1994 and is credited with a 51 percent increase of victims reporting domestic abuse, for five years.

VAWA provides services for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. It also locks in money for testing roughly 400,000 rape kits that, according to Human Rights Watch, have gone untested.

In addition, the Senate-passed measure provides protections for gay, lesbian and transgender couples, provides visas for undocumented immigrants who have been victims of abuse, and provides new authority for Native Americans officials in cases of abuse of Native American women by non-Native Americans. Republicans sought but failed to weaken these provisions through the amendment process.

Vermont Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, co-sponsor of the bill, defended the expanded protections.

“A victim is a victim is a victim. They all deserve our attention and the protection and access to services our bill provides,” Leahy said.

The Senate action comes before senators head out of Washington for a week-long recess. The House of Representatives must still act for the bill to go to the president’s desk. Female Republican House lawmakers held a news conference Wednesday announcing their version of the bill, which excludes protections for some groups.

“Our goal when we looked at this legislation…was to continue on the priorities that the original legislation did in 1994,” Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) said Wednesday.

The House Republican bill would increase prison sentences and penalties for convicted stalkers and perpetrators. The House is expected to take up its version the week of May 14. Two versions of the bill would need to be reconciled before a final bill can be sent to the president.

Madeleine McCann Investigation Reopened

Age Enhanced Photo

There has been a renewed interest in Finding Madeline McCann and there seems to be thoughts that she is still alive.   ABC  interviewed Det. Redwood and he said, ”[We are] seeking to bring closure to the case,” Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood told the BBC. Detectives for the first time since the investigation into McCann’s disappearance, dubbed Operation Grange by U.K. police, say that as a result of evidence uncovered during their latest review they now believe there is a possibility Madeleine is still alive and are appealing for direct information as to her whereabouts.”

This is great news, considering this week it has been five years since this beautiful little girl was taken from her parents during a vacation in Portugal.  The investigators have also released an age enhanced photo of what Madeline McCann may look like now with her 9th birthday approaching Mary 12.

It’s being called Operation Grange, a team of 30 Detectives who are reviewing all the evidence so far in the case.  They believe that there are at least 195 that need to be investigated further, most of which need to be translated from Portuguese.

Praying for a reunion for the McCann family.

Domestic Violence Against Men

FORUM DISCUSSION:

I was asked why I did not have S.A.V.E. Men on the website or the forum.  I really have no reason, other than all of the cases, mainly missing and murdered consisted of women.  I have not came across a case that involved a man being adbucted, kidnapped, murdered or abused in a domestic violence relationship.  I am not saying they do not exist, because Terri Stoddard, Program Director forhttp://www.saveservices.org/ posted on the S.A.V.E.Me FB page that “40% of all DV victims hurt enough to visit a hospital are men.” That is a startling figure.  Why do we not hear more about the men that are being abused?  I would love to hear others thoughts on this issue.  We KNOW women are targeted because they generally are weaker, but men? Below is a video from Terri’s website regarding statistics around this subject.

Bully – The Movie

The Bully Project: a year in the life of America’s bullying crisis

Bully will be in theaters all across the country 4/13 – check Fandango or https://www.facebook.com/bullymovie/events for cities and dates.

This year, over 13 million American kids will be bullied, making it the most common form of violence young people in the U.S. experience. Directed by Sundance- and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, Bully is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary—at its heart are those with the most at stake and whose stories each represent a different facet of this bullying crisis.

Following five kids and families over the course of a school year, the film confronts bullying’s most tragic outcomes, including the stories of two families who’ve lost children to suicide and a mother who waits to learn the fate of her 14 –year-old daughter, incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With rare access to the Sioux City Community School District, the film also gives an intimate glimpse into school busses, classrooms, cafeterias and even principles offices, offering insight into the often-cruel world of children, as teachers, administrators and parents struggle to find answers.

While the stories examine the dire consequences of bullying, they also give testimony to the courage and strength of the victims of bullying and seek to inspire real changes in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children, and in society as a whole. Through the power of these stories, Bully aims to be a catalyst for change and to turn the tide on an epidemic of violence that has touched every community in the United States—and far beyond.

Domestic Violence

By P.O.W.E.R.S. INC.
Be aware, this could be happening to you.

Estimates range from 960,000 incidents of violence against a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend to 3 million women who are physically abused by their husband or boyfriend
per year.

Women accounted for 85% of the victims of intimate partner violence, men for approximately 15%.

Between 600,000 and 6 million women are victims of domestic violence each year, and between 100,000 and 6 million men, depending on the type of survey used to obtain the data.

Women ages 20-24 are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.

Intimate partner violence affects people regardless of income. However, people with lower annual income (below $25K) are at a 3-times higher risk of intimate partner violence than people with higher annual income (over $50K).*

Studies show that access to shelter services leads to a 60-70% reduction in incidence and severity of re-assault during the 3-12 months’ follow up period compared to women who did not access shelter. Shelter services led to greater reduction in severe re-assault than did seeking court or law enforcement protection, or moving to a new location.

Nearly three out of four (74%) of Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence. 30% of Americans say they know a woman who has been physically abused by her husband or boyfriend in the past year.

Stop All Violence Everywhere

I was looking for a way to continue Morgan’s story, but also address the issue that we have all come to know very well…

VIOLENCE

May we all rise to the cause to promote awareness and help SAVE lives. The violence that is tearing through our communities has become too much to bear. I created this website for awareness and as a resource tool.

We must maintain a defensive stance at all times. We can teach each other the moves. As sad as it is, you have to always prepare for the unexpected. But if we stand together against the violence that is occurring in our world, we can take comfort in knowing that we did all we could do.

SPEAK OUT TO YOUR COMMUNITY
START NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAMS
PROTEST AGAINST THE RELEASE OF MURDERERS and SEX OFFENDERS
PROMOTE SELF DEFENSE PROGRAMS
TEACH OUR CHILDREN, TEENAGERS and OURSELVES THAT WE ARE VULNERABLE ONLY IF WE ALLOW IT
